In this 90-minute virtual workshop, we’ll think about endings as a kind of magic trick—the art of disappearing at exactly the right moment. We’ll look at the different ways poems make their exits and ask what makes an ending feel inevitable without feeling predictable. Through close reading, conversation, and a short writing exercise or two, we’ll practice recognizing when a poem has said enough, when it needs one more move, and when the best thing a poet can do is get out the way or get out the room.

Steven Espada Dawson has received fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the Poetry Foundation, and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. His poems have been anthologized in Sarabande’s Another Last Call, Best of the Net, Best New Poets, and Pushcart Prize. He serves as poet laureate of Madison, Wisconsin.
